Canon PIXMA MP480: U051 error with or without cartridges

I got new ink that is said to work with this printer, the 210XL and the 211XL. It has been in my garage gathering dust for quite some time now, and only recently did it start spewing this message the moment I try to use it again after some cleanup, with and without the ink in it. Anybody know a fix without having to send it to some Canon fix it shop?
