Electronics Skills: Essential equipment for beginner DIY Apple device repairs?

Hi all. I'm not new to DIY/taking things apart and putting them back together, but generally stayed away from tinkering with electronics, for obvious reasons.

I would like to start learning - my initial aim is maintenance, care and cleaning of my tech to extend its lifespan, though repairs and upgrades in the future would be cool. I learn best by doing, so I hope you can advise me on essentials for getting started.

As the title suggests, this will be mostly Apple devices and things like PS4 controllers.

Example things I'd like to be able to do:

clean dust build up out of overheating MacBook Pro with loud fans

(based on this video, I'm dubious of the methods but the dust build up inside is what interested me)

fix stick drift on DualShock4 controllers

eventually in the future, replace cracked screen on old iPad Pro (too expensive to be worth servicing - I'd rather learn)

What I'm thinking of purchasing:

iOpener kit

Anti-Static Project Tray

Anti-Static Brush

Moray Precision Driver Kit (I'm looking at this one over Minnow as there's a bunch of less important little gadgets and tech I have lying around that need precision screws and I'd rather not have to learn later something almost fits)

Precision Electronic Screwdriver

My questions:

Are there any other essentials you think are must-haves for my usage?

Is getting anti-static items meaningless without ESD mats/straps?

Are ESD mats/straps necessary for my use cases, and are risks of lack of proper set up the same across them?

If ESD precautions are necessary, can you recommend an 'entry-level' and budget friendly way to set up a workspace?

Is the electronic screwdriver safe to use from an ESD standpoint, or should I skip it?

Anything else I should absolutely know, but might not know I need to know it? :-)

This would give me a great starting point for further research and questions so I'd really value your input. No pressure to answer all of my questions.

Thanks in advance!

Electronics Skills: 3d printer won't power up

Hi everyone.

"I am using a Tenlog TL D3Pro that I purchased a few years ago. Yesterday it cut off as I was warming up for a print. After some trial and error I determined that it was a problem with the heated bed. I can turn on the machine and it will stay on until I try to heat up the bed and then it cuts off. It will come back on in a few seconds and run fine until I try to heat the bed again.

I checked where the wires are connected to the bed and followed them in to where they connect to the board inside the box. There is no sign of damaged or burned wires."

I asked this question on other forums and emailed the manufacturer and have gotten no answers yet.

New wrinkle - I put the machine back together and was going to try a print without the heated bed - now the power won't come on at all. Power switch does nothing.

My question is - How can I tell what the problem is. I know almost nothing about electronics. I have learned a little thru trial and error by working on the printer I had before this one - a Tronxy XY. But, with no visual evidence of where the problem originates, I don't know whether I need new wiring or something else.

Electronics Skills: Short in electric driver

Hello all! Got a funny one here.

So I ordered an Ifixit electric screwdriver, and after some deductive reasoning, I have come to believe that there is a short in it. The iFixit team was obviously kind enough to send me a replacement driver after receiving this faulty one, but I’m curious to see if I am able to fix or repair this one as well.

Pretty much, anytime I place fresh batteries into it, it will drain them in a short period of time, the driver will either work, not work, produce only light if I click on both buttons, work counter clockwise but not work clockwise, etc. Just curious if anyone has had any experience maybe disassembling this driver and if this is worth the time and energy seeing if it is repairable, or just give it in to recycle. Thanks for any feedback!

Electronics Skills: Questions on Creating a Custom Combo Headphone/Mic Cable

Hey guys!

I recently decided to take on a new DIY project, which is modding my existing headphones (Sony MDR 7506) and my ModMic to combine into a single detachable cable to make it much easier to manage at my computer. Last night I modded the 7506s and their stock cable to be detachable, which thankfully worked out great! The main concern I have now is how to properly combine the headphone cable with the ModMic cable, and I’m having some difficulty finding all the info I need online regarding the subject.

I’ve purchased Mogami W2893 quad mic cable (4 wire + shield) for the project. Originally I thought that both were stereo sources and I was going to run two separate cables for both devices and sleeve them together. However after taking apart the ModMic last night, I realized that it’s in fact a mono mic wired to a stereo jack. It didn’t make much sense to me to add significant bulk to the cable when I may actually be able to combine both into one, making the cable literally half the weight it was going to be before. It was when I started looking up information on combining these cables that I started having trouble, specifically when to use shield as ground, or if I could share a common ground between the two devices. From my understanding it should work similarly to a TRRS cable.

If I were to combine these cables, what would be the best way to wire them? I’ve seen many stereo instrument cables use the shielding as ground. Would I be able to use 2 of the wires for L/R headphone signals, the shielding for headphone ground, and the remaining 2 cables for mic signal and ground? Or would there be a better way to do this (my other idea was to use a common ground between the two devices but I’m not sure if this is a good idea or not). My thought would be to wire it similarly to the way that regular TRRS cables are wired, however I’m not totally knowledgeable in that either, particularly when to solder the shield and ground together if at all. Would I combine the ground wires of the headphones and mic into one, then solder those to the shield as well so they have a common ground and shield?

Thanks for reading! Any help would be really appreciated

Electronics Skills: How to repair/replace graphite track LCD ribbon

Various simple devices with a 7-segment or custom monochrome LCD display have a multi-way graphite track ribbon connecting the LCD to the circuit board. This is attached to the LCD at one end and the circuit board at the other with anisotropic adhesive tape such as 3m 9703. A common fault after a number of years is that this adhesive fails. You can sometimes reattach it with a hot smoothing iron but this may be only a temporary fix if it works at all.

I’ve tried reattaching one on a personal GPS tracker with new 3M 9703 tape but it hasn’t worked (no segments work). Probably I should have thoroughly cleaned off the original adhesive first, or maybe ribbon has failed.

Does anyone know a source of replacement ribbons? The nearest I can find are FFC ribbons with pre-prepared ends designed for push-fit or ZIF ribbon connectors, and all much too long and the wrong number of tracks.

Alternatively, has anyone had any success repairing or reattaching these?

I changed the cable to a new HDMI cable which works on both systems but has the same issues as described originally. So no cable problem.

The problem occurs after operation of 20+ minutes and remains, its gets so bad that the entire screen looks overexposed no matter what u try to do to fix it and i tried literally everything i also hooked it up to my laptop to check and it starts doing it there too.

the problem is also visible in BIOS screen before any drivers are loaded.

The problem occured just like that and i think operation heat makes it worse. The screen is built Dec 2016 and worked for me from summer 2017 to now just fine. There was no sign of degradation over time. The image just broke without any event connected to it. This is a hardware issue or what do you think, and if it is what component might be faulty?
