Handspring Visor Deluxe PDA: Pda doesn't keep data when replacing batteties

I have a pda visor deluxe since 1999 and when I change batteries within 1 min. it keeps data without any problem. I bought recently a brand new one, and it doesn't keep data when I replace batteries. What's the problem? How can I fix it?

I have 2 lines across the screen when I insert the batteries, the power button dosen’t work and the back light is on and won’t shut off I tried hard and soft re-set just the same 2 lines and back light on any Ideas??
