Background and Identification
Founded in 1909, Suzuki Motor Corporation is a Japanese motorcycle manufacturer headquartered in Minami-ku, Hamamatsu, Japan. Suzuki manufactures small internal combustion engines, automobiles, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, wheelchairs, and outboard marine engines. In Japan, Suzuki’s domestic motorcycle sales volume is the third largest.
Michio Suzuki founded the Suzuki Loom Works in 1909 to support Japan’s booming silk industry. In 1937, Suzuki began a small car project to diversify his company. The first Suzuki automobiles were powered by four-stroke, liquid-cooled, four-cylinder engines, which was innovative for the time. After the collapse of the cotton market in 1951, Suzuki turned its focus back to motor vehicles. Suzuki’s first two-wheeled vehicle was a bicycle with a “clip-on” gasoline-powered engine due to the demand for affordable personal transportation in Japan. The 1952 Power Free motorbike included a 36cc, one-horsepower, two-stroke engine, and riders could either pedal with the engine assistance, pedal without engine assistance, or disconnect the pedals and operate the vehicle on engine power alone. Suzuki was producing about 6,000 motorcycles per month by 1954, and Suzuki Loom Works officially changed its name to Suzuki Motor Company, Ltd.
Suzuki vehicles can be identified by the Suzuki emblem, which portrays a stylized letter ‘S’ and is generally red, black, or silver in color. Suzuki motorcycles generally include the name “Suzuki” printed in capital letters on the side of the vehicle.
