Introduction

Follow this guide to replace or upgrade the headband on your AirPods Max.

What you need

    • Before starting your repair:

    • Unplug and remove all cables and accessories.

    • To help stabilize the ear cups and prevent scratching them, consider placing your AirPods Max on a soft, clean cloth.

    • The earpads are secured with magnets

    • Lift the earpads straight up and remove them.

    • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a small, straightened paperclip into the hole on the top edge of one of the ear cups.

    • Push down with your tool and pull the headband connector straight out of its socket.

    • The headband connector should slide out easily. If you're having trouble, reposition the tool and try again—you may need to angle the bit slightly.

    • Repeat the previous step to remove the other ear cup.

    • The headband and ear cup should be oriented in the "closed" position (how they would be when stored in a case) when installing them.

    • Hold an ear cup steady with one hand, and use your free hand to firmly push the headband connector into its slot—it should click into place.

    • This can be tricky and may take a few tries. If you're having trouble, reposition the connector slightly and try again.

    • Repeat the previous step to install the other ear cup.

    • Place the earpads into their cups—they should "snap" into place.

    • The right earpad goes on the cup with the Digital Crown and Noise Control buttons.
