At iFixit, we want you to use and recycle batteries safely and responsibly. We are obliged to draw your attention to the provisions of the EU Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning the distribution of batteries or the delivery of devices containing batteries.
Safe use of batteries
- Only use batteries with the products they are designed for.
- Keep batteries away from heat, direct sunlight, and flames.
- Do not open, crush, or expose batteries to water.
- Store batteries out of reach of children.
- When batteries are not installed, ensure poles are electrically isolated by wrapping exposed conductors with non-conductive tape or similar material.
Batteries that contain hazardous substances are labeled with the symbol of the "crossed-out" wheeled recycling bin.
The labelling for hazardous substances is provided next to the recycling bin symbol:
- Pb = battery contains lead of more than 0.004 percent by weight.
- Cd = battery contains cadmium of more than 0.002 percent by weight.
- Hg = battery contains mercury of more than 0.0005 percent by weight.
Separate collection and recycling of these batteries helps prevent potential negative impacts on human health and the environment due to the hazardous substances they contain.
Returning used or damaged batteries
- Used batteries can be returned free of charge at official collection points in all EU countries.
- These collection boxes are usually found at retail stores, recycling centers, and municipal waste facilities.
- Do not dispose of batteries in household waste — it harms the environment and is prohibited by law.
Damaged batteries can't be shipped. Please don't send them back to us, instead return them to an authorized collection point in your area.
A battery is damaged if it is
- swollen,
- punctured,
- overheated,
- leaking,
- or visibly damaged.
