Why is my iPad not connecting to the keyboard?

Does the keyboard have to charge for a period of time before it will work or should it work immediately once attached?

Options

Yes, it needs to charge a little, which it will do if you plug in with it in easel mode. In a few minutes, touch a key and they should light up. I love this, but wish the time could be adjusted.
