iPhone 17 dead after battery depleted

Hi,

So a family member gave me their iPhone 17 to look at. It is currently stone dead. No signs of life at all. They said the battery was at 1% and then the screen went black (assume battery died). After that they said they could not turn the phone back on. They left it charging and still could not turn it on.

I took a look myself and see it is completely dead. There's nothing on screen. There's no battery icon or anything to say it's low on battery. The screen just remains black.

I tried the force restart method (says to quickly press volume up, then down and then hold the power button until Apple logo appears) which did nothing. I've tried multiple cables, computers and wall outlets. Still same.

I have a USB amp meter and I can see when I connect cable, it cycles between different watts. It regularly jumps from 0 to about 2.1W. I see frequent 2.1W readings but it keeps going back to 0 and then up again (sometimes at a lower wattage). It's like it's trying to charge, but can't for some reason.

The phone is still in warranty period, so it can be returned. However, I'd like to check if there's maybe anything that can be done to bring it back to life as it does seem weird that it just died after the battery went out.

Anyone know what could be wrong? If it's a hardware issue, then I'll just send it back for a replacement. But I am hoping there's a way to bring it back to life as this will be faster than waiting for a replacement. It's not looking promising though.

My 17 pro max.. dead as a rock right now.

do you diagnostic the charging port by tools ?

by

Return it under warranty. Simples.

This just happened to my iPhone 17 pro max. I tried all the forced reset methods (pressing vol up, then pressing vol down, then press and holding the power button) and nothing. I started to panic, I plugged into my extension lead with a legitimate apple plug and the charger the phone came with. Left it on charger for around 2 hours and it came on by itself. Very bizarre.

I have no idea why it happens and it’s clearly a problem to do with the new Apple phones but I won’t let my phone die again 😅

I tried all of the suggested U-tube fixes and nothing worked. Still a black screen and seemingly lifeless. After hours of looking for a solution (using my iPad)I ran across a video with a solution I had never seen. I placed my magnetic battery pack on the back of my phone and within 5 minutes, my phone returned to life. I was able to charge it with my cable after that. The black screen has happened to me 4 times in the past few months. I bought my iPhone 17 pro max Dec. 2025. I have a service appointment this afternoon. I’ll be traveling overseas in a few months and don’t want to chance it dying completely while I’m there.

Well, I don't know what happened, but it's decided to work again. I kept trying to get it to charge to no avail. I then decided to try seeing if I could force it into DFU mode. I connected the phone to my PC (with amp meter still connected). It still didn't charge. I then tried to put it into DFU mode after following a video that showed how to force it into DFU mode.

Not sure if I was successful, but after trying some of the button combinations, I saw wattage on the amp meter stabilised. It jumped to 2.1W and settled. I left it alone for a bit in this state (maybe 5-10mins). Current then massively dropped to around 100mA or so (wattage was below 1W). I then held down the power button to attempt to power it on and the Apple logo suddenly appeared.

It's now charging normally and booted into iOS. Must've been some kind of software bug? I did some searching online and saw a handful of reports about this issue (dead after battery depletion) with various fixes (such as using a Mac and wireless charger). I had none of those. Maybe those would've fixed it, or maybe not. Who knows.

Glad to see it's working for now. Amp meter was an immense help for this issue. It allowed me to see what the phone was actually doing (i.e. whether it was actually trying to charge or not). Might not have brought it to life without it.

The same problem occurs on the iPhone 17 Pro, I pressed the power button and the volume down button at the same time (for 5 seconds) and then pressed the power button and left only the volume down button. And the sound of the voltage stabilized and it turned on!

omg this worked! thank you!!!

by

Same for me but I’m skeptical as it has happened to me three times now

by

Think I might return while I’m still in the warranty period.

Sometimes charging by induction instead of plugging it in wakes it up. Seems to be an issue if it’s allowed to drain too low.. ofc it shouldn’t do this.

For future reference

Issue: Device not starting after battery has been depleted. No physical or water damage.

Possible solution: Plug in an original or a good quality charger, try hard-restart: press volume up once, volume down once, and hold power button until Apple logo appears.

same issue: phone died last night, went to charge it in the morning and it would not charge, no red battery symbol, no response to button mashing. saw another comment that said a wireless charging pad worked— wireless charging pad worked for me just now as well. phone turned on and is now charging normally with the same cord now. turned on in about three minutes.

Ive tried all of these things and mine still won't turn on, can anyone share a timeline. How long did you leave it on a charger before trying the reset methods?

It was left on charger all day. When I took a look at it, it was still dead. The usual reset method did not work ((says to quickly press volume up, then down and then hold the power button).

Then I got a USB amp meter and plugged the phone into it to see charging behaviour. I could see the phone was trying to charge (power draw was jumping between 0-2.1W). I left it charging in this state for several hours to see if behaviour changed. It did not.

I was considering sending it in for replacement. I found a video on YouTube titled "How To Put iPhone 17 In DFU Mode!". As I was following the button combinations mentioned in the video, I noticed the amp meter power draw stabilised (went to 2.1W and stayed there rather than dropping to 0W).

Then I left the phone charging in this state for maybe 10-15mins. After some time, I saw power draw dropped low. After this, I just held down the power button and the Apple logo suddenly appeared. Worked fine after that.

That's what I did.

Woke up and had a blank screen that couldn't charge or turn on tried the volume up and volume down combinations then power button after several trials for over an hour it finally came on . The key to this is to keep it charging and have patience and keep trying

This happened to my daughters Iphone 17 last night. After connecting it to a charger the phone would not present any life signs. This morning it would still not wake up. It is hard to understand what did work because i did many of the suggested moves in this thread. I can say that that was only after 1 or 2 minutes of wireless charging that i got it to work.

Check charge port for any dirt/debris. This can cause issues with charging as the cable won't be able to make a connection to the port. Use something like a toothpick to dislodge anything that may be stuck inside.

If that doesn't work, try another cable. Possible the cable has failed.

If both don't work, you may have an issue with the charge port. It might've got damaged in a way that stops it from working. Worst case is phone has an issue with the charging circuit on the main board.

Issues outlined on this thread were mostly software-related, charging worked normally after phone booted. So if yours isn't, there may be a hardware issue.
