Why is my washer roaring?

Our Whirlpool top load washer (WTW5010LW0) is making a loud roaring noise when it spins. It has no other problems except for the loud roar on spin. It has a little bit of the noise when I manually spin the drum. It is around 3 or 4 years old

Loud "roaring" in spin (sounding like a jet engine) is almost always a sign of pitted tub bearings. You can confirm by rolling the tub back and forth with your hand on the lip of the spin basket; it should feel silky smooth. If it feels at all rough, or makes any crunchy noises while you're moving it (which it kind of sounds like what you're describing) then the bearings races are getting pitted, bearings failing.

On your machine, the bearings are part of the "Gearcase" assembly, p/n W11164183. It's possible to DIY the replacement, plenty of youtube videos showing "VMW Gearcase replacement", several minor variants exist, but you will need a spanner wrench like Supco's TB123B to loosen the tub nut. It usually takes an experienced tech around 45min, but for your first time budget 2-3 hours, a little swearing, and $150-$200 for the part
